Historically, drug research related to membrane protein targets has been hampered by difficult protein expression and three-dimensional structure studies. We first obtain proteins in their native conformation through engineering methods, and then through a series of the biophysical means to obtain the three-dimensional structures of these targets themselves and target-ligand complexes.
